ON BEHALF OF TEXAS A&M AGRILIFE EXTENSION, I'M HONORED TO BE ABLE TO SHARE WHAT OUR HORTICULTURE DEPARTMENTS, AS WELL AS OUR BRAZORIA COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS, HAVE ACCOMPLISHED OVER THE LAST YEAR.

MY NAME IS KIMBERLY MAYOR AND I AM THE HORTICULTURE AGENT FOR BRAZORIA COUNTY.

MY JOB AT TEXAS A&M AGRILIFE EXTENSION IS TO.

ONE IS TO WORK SIDE BY SIDE WITH OUR BRAZORIA COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS, AND ALSO TO OFFER EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES AND PROGRAMS ON ALL THINGS RELATED TO HORTICULTURE.

SO FROM TREES TO TURF TO TOMATOES, WE WE LIKE TO SAY WE TEACH IT ALL.

NEXT SLIDE PLEASE.

AT EXTENSION WE VALUE PEOPLE PROGRAMS AND PARTNERSHIPS.

AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHERE WE PUT ALL OF OUR RESOURCES AND ATTENTION DURING 2023, AND HAVE CONTINUED TO DO SO IN 2024.

WE HAVE INVESTED IN INDIVIDUALS WHO WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION.

WE HAVE REFINED OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF BRAZORIA COUNTY RESIDENTS, AND WE HAVE FORGED PARTNERSHIPS AND MAINTAINED RELATIONSHIPS WITH SEVERAL LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, ALL IN AN EFFORT TO STRENGTHEN OUR TIES TO THE COMMUNITY.

SO HERE IS A LOOK AT SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT WE HAVE INVESTED IN.

AND THAT IS OUR 2024 MASTER GARDENER INTERN CLASS.

THIS PAST JANUARY, WE BEGAN OUR 11 WEEK JOURNEY OF EDUCATION AND FELLOWSHIP WITH 21 STUDENTS.

OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT TWO AND A HALF MONTHS, WE LAUGHED, WE LEARNED, AND WE CREATED LIFETIME FRIENDSHIPS WITH PEOPLE THAT WE MAY NOT HAVE EVER MET OTHERWISE. WE HEARD FROM STATE EXTENSION SPECIALISTS ON TOPICS LIKE PLANT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT, INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT, TURFGRASS AND EARTH KIND GARDENING.

WE ALSO BROUGHT IN OUR OWN LOCAL EXPERTS TO TEACH ABOUT THINGS LIKE HERBS, VEGETABLES, PROPAGATION, ROSES AND PRUNING WOODY ORNAMENTALS. AND THIS YEAR WE ALSO IMPLEMENTED LOTS MORE HANDS ON AND PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF VITAL GARDENING SKILLS, SUCH AS TAKING A SOIL SAMPLE, PROPER FERTILIZATION OF YOUR LAWN, AND HOW TO PLANT A TREE.

THESE INTERNS RECEIVED OVER 50 HOURS OF EDUCATIONAL TRAINING FROM AGRILIFE EXTENSION, AND ONCE THEY HAVE COMPLETED THEIR VOLUNTEER SERVICE, 50 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE, WE MAKE THEM OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL AND MAKE THEM CERTIFIED TEXAS MASTER GARDENERS.

FROM THE FEEDBACK THAT I RECEIVED, THESE INTERNS REALLY APPRECIATED THAT THIS TYPE OF LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND BENEFITED FROM THAT TYPE OF INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE.

AND SO WE ARE THRILLED THAT WE CAN PROVIDE SUCH INNOVATIVE AND IMMERSIVE TRAINING TO OUR INTERNS.

A LITTLE BIT OF A FORMATTING PROBLEM THERE.

SORRY ABOUT THAT, BUT HERE'S A LOOK AT OUR NUMBERS FOR 2023.

23. WE CURRENTLY HAVE 107 CERTIFIED MASTER GARDENERS AND 15 INTERNS.

THESE MEMBERS HAVE NOT ONLY VOLUNTEERED OVER 11,000 HOURS, BUT THEY ALSO ATTENDED MORE THAN 2500 CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS SO THAT THEY CAN REMAIN CERTIFIED AND CONTINUE TO SHARE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE WITH THE PUBLIC.

AND ONE NUMBER THAT I DON'T THINK THAT WE SHARE ENOUGH OF IS THE NUMBER OF MILES DRIVEN OVER OVER THE PAST YEAR.

IT'S A WHOPPING 81,000 MILES THAT THESE VOLUNTEERS HAVE DRIVEN TO COME TO DIFFERENT EVENTS AND OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES.

AND SO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE NOTE THAT.

AND, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE THEY'RE DRIVING THEIR OWN VEHICLES TO TO ALL THESE EVENTS.

AND WE SURE DO APPRECIATE THAT.

AND SO THESE NUMBERS ARE REALLY JUST A DIRECT REFLECTION OF THE HIGH QUALITY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT WE OFFER AND HOW WE PROVIDE OUR AUDIENCE WITH EDUCATION AND SERVICE. ONE OTHER ASPECT OF OUR OUTREACH PROGRAMING IS THAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON REACHING MORE AND MORE CITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.

YOU CAN SEE FROM THE MAP THAT IN 2023, OUR PROGRAMS AND EVENTS WERE HELD IN NINE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT BRAZORIA COUNTY.

AND IN 2024, WE'VE ALREADY BEEN ABLE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF 12 CITIES WITHIN THE COUNTY.

IT'S PROBABLY HIGHER BY NOW.

THOSE WOULD PROBABLY NEED TO BE UPDATED SOMEWHAT, BUT WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

SOME OF THESE EVENTS INCLUDE MASTER GARDENER LED SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS, PLANTS AND TREE SALES, AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT I OFFER LIKE THE TOMATO BASIL, BASH, TREE PLANTING 101 AND WHAT KILLED MY LAWN A MURDER MYSTERY BECAUSE BASICALLY NOTHING MAKES THE EXTENSION PHONE RING MORE THAN QUESTIONS ABOUT TREES, TURF, AND TOMATOES.

SO WHY NOT HAVE CLASSES TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THOSE THOSE THOSE PARTICULAR TOPICS.

BECAUSE HONESTLY, NOBODY CALLS ME ABOUT THEIR KOHLRABI AND THEIR TURNIPS AND RUTABAGAS.

SO TREES AND TURF IT IS.

ALL RIGHT. AND SO WITH THAT, I WILL WRAP THIS UP AND TELL YOU THAT ALTHOUGH WE'RE DOING SOME REALLY GREAT THINGS HERE IN BRAZORIA COUNTY, NONE OF THAT WOULD BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE IMMENSE SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF THE ENTIRE COUNTY.

THIS IS OUR STRAWBERRY JAMBOREE.

THIS IS ONE OF THE LARGER EVENTS THAT WE'VE HELD MOST RECENTLY, THAT AND OCTOBERFEST, WHICH I'M HERE TO SPEAK ABOUT IN JUST A MINUTE.

THE STRAWBERRY JAMBOREE EVENT CAME ABOUT DUE TO A NEED FOR MORE EDUCATION, ABOUT WHEN THE PROPER TIME TO PLANT STRAWBERRIES WAS.

MOST OF THE BIG BOX STORES, YOU'LL NOTICE, WILL HAVE STRAWBERRY PLANTS OUT IN THE SPRING AND IN IN ALL ACTUALITY.

NOW THE FALL IS WHEN YOU SHOULD PLANT THOSE STRAWBERRIES.

AND SO WE PUT TOGETHER THE STRAWBERRY JAMBOREE LAST YEAR TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY ON WHEN TO WIN.

THOSE STRAWBERRIES SHOULD BE PLANTED, AND IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS AND THIS YEAR'S EVENT WENT OVER EQUALLY AS WELL.

THE STRAWBERRY JAMBOREE HAD EXTENSION SPECIALISTS WE HAD THAT CAME AS SPEAKERS, WE HAD EXHIBITORS, WE HAD STRAWBERRY PLANTS THAT PEOPLE COULD PREORDER AND A REALLY GREAT STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE CONTEST.

ALL IN ALL, WE HAD ABOUT 100 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE, AND SO FAR WE'VE SOLD ABOUT 2000 OF OUR BARE ROOT PLANTS SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO OFFER HIGH QUALITY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMING SUCH AS THIS.

BUT AGAIN, WE CAN'T PULL THESE PROGRAMS OFF WITHOUT OUR VOLUNTEERS.

AND SO BESIDES OUR OUR AMAZING BRAZORIA COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS, WE ALSO HAD JUDGES WHO HAD THE VERY TOUGH TASK OF JUDGING OUR STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE CONTEST.

AND ONE OF THOSE JUDGES WAS YOUR VERY OWN RICHARD NELSON FROM THE PARKS DEPARTMENT.

AND SO TONIGHT, WE WANTED TO BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE HIM WITH A CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION AND A STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE PIN.

SO I'LL HOLD THAT FOR HIM AND MAKE SURE THAT HE GETS IT.

BUT WE JUST WANTED TO THANK HIM FOR HIS HIS SERVICE AND DEDICATION TO AGRILIFE EXTENSION.

SO OKTOBERFEST WAS HELD HERE IN ANGLETON AT LAKESIDE PARK.

IT'S VERY SIMILAR TO THE FORMAT OF THE STRAWBERRY JAMBOREE, AND THAT IT WAS A FUN AND EDUCATIONAL EVENT.

IT BROUGHT OUT SOME FIG TASTIC INDIVIDUALS AND ESPECIALLY INDIVIDUALS LIKE JUSTIN NOWAK, HE'S, TEXAS GARDEN GUY.

HE'S GOING TO GIVE HIM A MINUTE TO TO SPEAK IN JUST A JUST A MOMENT.

BUT WE ALSO BROUGHT IN, AGAIN, SOME OF OUR SPECIALISTS FROM TEXAS A&M.

WE HAD SOMEWHAT AN EXPERT CALLED TIM.

TIM HARTMAN, WHO CAME AND EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ON THE RESEARCH THAT HE'S DOING WITH FIGS.

WE HAD STEPHEN JANAK, WHO IS A FRUIT SPECIALIST.

COME AND SHARE. JUST FIG.

AND WE ALSO HAVE HAD DOCTOR KEVIN ONG FROM THE PLANT CLINIC COME AND TALK ABOUT OR ANSWER QUESTIONS ON ON DISEASES THAT FIGS MIGHT, MIGHT HAVE. AND SO WE ALSO HAD AN EXPERT PANEL WHERE ALL OF THOSE EXPERTS SAT DOWN AND ANSWERED QUESTIONS DIRECTLY FROM THE AUDIENCE.

AND I THINK THE PARTICIPANTS REALLY ENJOYED THAT PART.

WE HAD SOME AMAZING SPONSORS WHO ALLOWED US TO GIVE AWAY 24 FIG TREES AND SOME REALLY GOOD QUALITY SOIL.

WE ALSO RECEIVED 200 FIG CUTTINGS FROM THE FIG HUNTER OUT OF CALIFORNIA, WHICH ALLOWED US TO TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO PROPAGATE FIGS, AND ALMOST EVERYBODY WENT HOME WITH A TREE.

YOU CAN SEE DOWN THERE IN THE CORNER IN THE RIGHT HAND CORNER, EVERYBODY KIND OF GATHERED AROUND THE TABLE PROPAGATING FIGS THERE IN THAT AREA. AND SO BUT WHAT SO MANY PEOPLE HAD TO SAY WAS THAT THEY TRULY ENJOYED THE VENUE AND THAT LAKESIDE PARK WAS STUNNING.

THE WEATHER WAS GREAT THAT DAY.

WE HAD A COVERED STAGE FOR OUR SPEAKERS AND WE USED THE OUTLOOK AREA FOR OUR EXHIBITORS.

THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM TO OFFER REFRESHMENTS AND HAVE OUR FIG PROPAGATION.

THE KIDS PLAYED AT THE PARK WHILE THE PARENTS LISTENED TO THE LECTURE, AND SO IT MADE IT REALLY FAMILY FRIENDLY.

ON SEPTEMBER THE 30TH, THEY SUBMITTED THEIR FIRST CONTROL ESTIMATE.

AGAIN, JUST TO REMEMBER THAT WHOLE CONSTRUCTION MANAGER AT RISK, WE'RE BRINGING A POTENTIAL GENERAL CONTRACTOR ON BOARD AS WE ARE DESIGNING THIS PROJECT TO GIVE US THAT REAL TIME CONSTRUCTION COST ESTIMATE.

SO WE GET TO BID DAY AND WE DON'T OPEN UP A BIG BAD SURPRISE.

THESE SHOULD BE DOLLARS AND SCOPE OF WORK THAT WE ARE WORKING IN CONCERT WITH COUNCILMAN STAFF MEMBERS, BUILDING OCCUPANTS, SO ON AND SO FORTH TO MAKE SURE THAT WE GET EVERYTHING IN THIS PROJECT THAT WE NEED.

CONTROL ESTIMATE ON SEPTEMBER THE 30TH IN THE AMOUNT OF 5,239,000 AND SOME CHANGE.

IT'S A CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE, JUST SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT WORKING WITH A VERY EXHAUSTIVE SET OF DRAWINGS RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE WE ARE SO EARLY IN THE GAME.

WE WORKED WITH CITY STAFF.

THE RESIDENTS PREFERRED TO NOT BECOME A THROUGH STREET NEAR ONE OF THE BUSIEST INTERSECTIONS IN TOWN.

THE GATE HAS SERVED ITS PURPOSE WELL, AND WE FEEL THAT REMOVAL OF IT TODAY WILL DRAMATICALLY INCREASE TRAFFIC IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, WHICH IS GOING TO LEAD TO SAFETY INCIDENTS FOR RESIDENTS, FOR COMMUTERS ON HENDERSON AND FOR STUDENTS WALKING TO AND FROM SCHOOL.

ROSEWOOD WILL BECOME A THOROUGHFARE AS DRIVERS TRY TO AVOID THE HEAVY TRAFFIC AT HENDERSON AND DOWNING, WHICH ROUTINELY GETS CONGESTED DUE TO ITS PROXIMITY TO THE JUNIOR HIGH.

THE STADIUM AND FREEDOM PARK, BOTH NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC ON DOWNING AND EASTBOUND TRAFFIC ON HENDERSON WOULD SEE ROSEWOOD AS A SHORTCUT NOT JUST DURING PEAK SCHOOL ZONE TIMES, BUT DURING FOOTBALL GAMES, JUNIOR HIGH EVENTS, CONCERTS, OPEN HOUSE AWARD CEREMONIES.

THERE'S EVENTS AT FREEDOM PARK, GRADUATION, ALL KINDS OF THINGS THAT GO ON.

BUT BACK TO SCHOOL ZONE TIME'S A TOP ISSUE IS STUDENTS WALKING ON DOWNING TO AND FROM SCHOOL.

STUDENTS THAT WALK ARE USUALLY FOCUSED ON FRIENDS OR PHONES, AND THEY DON'T STOP AT THE INTERSECTIONS ALONG DOWNTOWN TOWARDS THE JUNIOR HIGH.

YOU CAN WITNESS KIDS BIKING WHILE TEXTING.

ROSEWOOD RESIDENTS KNOW ABOUT THIS AND WE LOOK FOR THIS.

BUT SOMEONE IN A HURRY TAKING A SHORTCUT, TRYING TO AVOID TRAFFIC PROBABLY WON'T.

VISIBILITY IS ALSO LIMITED WHEN YOU'RE EXITING OUR NEIGHBORHOOD ONTO DOWNING, AND YOU HAVE TO PASS THROUGH THE SIDEWALK PATH TO BE ABLE TO SEE ONCOMING TRAFFIC, SO STUDENTS ARE GOING TO BE AT RISK IF THIS CHANGE HAPPENS.

FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD ITSELF, ROSEWOOD IS NOT FIT FOR HEAVY TRAFFIC.

THE DRIVEWAY IS ABOUT 50FT APART.

THERE'S CARS PARKED ON THE STREET.

THERE'S DELIVERY TRUCKS ALL TIMES OF THE DAY.

UTILITY TRUCKS, YOU NAME IT.

JUNIOR HIGH PARENTS WILL USE THE NEIGHBORHOOD FOR DROP OFF AND PICKUP AS WELL.

IF YOU TURN ONTO ROSEWOOD FROM EITHER SIDE, YOU'RE IMMEDIATELY CROSSING DRIVEWAYS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

THERE'S NOT MUCH ROAD.

ONCE YOU GET TO THOSE, IF YOU TURN ON FROM HENDERSON, YOU'LL CROSS THREE STREET BASKETBALL GOALS EVERY 100FT.

KIDS ARE USED TO PLAYING IN THAT STREET.

EVEN IF WE WERE TO DO SOMETHING LIKE MAKE ROSEWOOD A ONE WAY STREET, THERE WOULD STILL BE ISSUES.

HENDERSON ITSELF IS COMPLICATED WHEN IT'S BACKED UP.

THERE'S EVEN PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC ON HENDERSON.

IF WE INTRODUCE TRAFFIC TURNING IN AND OUT OF ROSEWOOD INTO THAT, THAT COULD MAKE HENDERSON WORSE, MORE COMPLICATED.

ON THE DOWNSIDE, THERE'S ALSO CONGESTION, TRAFFIC TURNING FROM RESIDENTIAL STREETS, A GAS STATION.

AND IT'S SLOW AND IT'S FRUSTRATING.

I KNOW THAT BECAUSE I HAVE TO DRIVE THROUGH IT ON EITHER SIDE TO GET TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD.

BUT IN THIS CASE, I THINK SLOW IS CONTROLLED AND SLOWER IS SAFER THAN A FREE FOR ALL OR PEOPLE TRYING TO GAUGE THE BEST ROUTE SHORTCUT TO TAKE.

SO THIS WOULD JUST $6 MILLION WOULD BE SOMETHING THAT YOU'D BE PERIODICALLY DOING TO, TO MAINTAIN THE DITCHES.
